How should we choose our beliefs
Our beliefs should reflect our purpose and give us strength, but we often choose them based on partial facts and hearsay, leading to contradictions and pain.
The great Sherlock Holmes has always said that..
'One should be wary of theorizing..
Before one has collected sufficient data.
Inevitably, a person starts to fit..
Data to the theories they have..
Instead of finding a theory that fits the data.'
Sherlock Holmes was a disciplined person..
He was dedicated to his art, ready to sacrifice for it.
An average human being is not.
That means a normal human being..
Will most likely fit the data to the theories they have.
Theories are nothing but beliefs about the world.
If you believe others are good, you will try to find the data to affirm that belief.
If you believe others are bad, you will try to find the data to reinforce that negativity.
But the truth is that there is good and evil in everything.
There is nothing absolutely good or absolutely bad.
An act of violence that is considered wrong in most environments.
It will be considered good, in fact encouraged in specific other environments.
A rattling argument with teachers is considered harmful in most schools..
But it is highly appreciated in a court of law.
Those looking good and bad in natural processes (including humans)..
Will always end up wasting their time with a lot of unresolved headaches.
If we believe in good, we will find good, enhancing our quality of life.
If we believe in evil, we will find bad, degrading our peace and traquality.
So, in conclusion, our beliefs are related to things that are not objectively defined.
It cannot be a matter of facts; it must be a matter of our purpose.
We should choose our beliefs according to what kind of life we want to live.
It is not easy to believe in good. It also doesn't come naturally to us.
Because we are born fearful. Our survival instincts take over.
But life is not about surviving, its about living.
Hence, new, mature beliefs need to be cultivated.
To live and to thrive.
